Professional's Corner | Vintage-Inspired Barn Lights Right at Home Down on the Farm

With a long history dating back to the civil war, Summerfield Farms has seen its share of crops raised, cows milked, and families come and go. Today, grass-fed cattle still roam the hillsides and acres of crops thrive in the temperate climate of North Carolina’s Piedmont region. But the farm has undergone a renaissance of sorts under the guidance of Barbour Spangle Design out of High Point, NC.

“This has been an ongoing project for several years,” says Christi Barbour, principal and co-CEO along with Christi Spangle. “The initial project was the farm store, called The Market, which was originally a tractor shed. Then we worked on the renovation of the Main Barn, along with the Pole Barn, which once stored hay and other farm equipment.”

“Our client wanted to keep the rustic nature of the original buildings, but also add an element of refinement since the space is often used as a wedding venue,” Barbour says. “Our design direction could be considered casual elegance.”

In searching for appropriate lighting for the buildings, both Barbour and Spangle focused on aesthetics first. The look had to fit the environment, and the farm environment screamed for barn lighting.

The Original™ Warehouse Gooseneck Light was an obvious choice for the newly renovated Pole Barn. These hand-spun, American-made gooseneck barn lights feature 14″ shades and a classic Barn Red finish. Generous G2 gooseneck arms project the shades more than 39″ away from the facade.

“We are drawn to Barn Light Electric designs for many reasons including aesthetics, variety, price point, availability, and color options,” says Spangle. “These fixtures fit exactly what we were looking for from a visual standpoint.”

Inside the Pole Barn, complementary Barn Light Arlington Sconces accent the posts throughout the space adding a pop of Barn Red color. These barn wall sconces feature a compact 8″ shade offering an unobtrusive profile.

“These lights fit the environment and complement the original architecture of the structure,” notes Emily Springer, a design assistant with the project.

Nearby, the Main Barn serves as the premiere event space with both heat and AC, built-in stage, and beautiful lighting. Outside, the Owings Mill Barn Lantern offers a gentle glow to the festivities through clear seeded glass. Offered in three sizes, this barn lantern sports a Natural Bronze finish.

Inside the space, modern wall sconces bring a heightened sense of elegance to the room. The Chelsea Sconce features a teardrop bulb hanging on an exposed silk cord.

“Our lighting selections were made based on scale, color, and design. You can tell that the lights fit the space so well. We love everything about them!” says Barbour. “If we were staring this project over, we would still make the same selections. They really add to the design of the building and define our design concept.”
