Porch Lighting Offers Both Safety, Style To Tybee Vacation Cottage

Although September is half over and the autumnal equinox will occur in less than a week, there’s still time to enjoy our outdoor spaces just a bit longer. Unless you live in Colorado where it snowed last Friday!

When our staff photographers visited Tybee Island, Georgia, last week, the weather was warm but rainy. And while you might think the inclement weather put a damper on their outdoor activities, the ladies made good use of this beautiful wrap-around porch at the Sea Star Cottage, one of more than two dozen cottages managed by Mermaid Cottages.

This particular cottage was built in the 1930s and the deep porch is perfect for rocking away the hours while staying nice and dry. Lauren, Joanna, and Danielle thoroughly enjoyed putting their feet up and watching the storms roll by after a long day of shooting lights!

Exterior lighting is integral to the ambiance of a porch and should not only function with safety in mind but also to help set the mood of the space. Here at the Sea Star Cottage, a Benjamin® Sky Chief Porcelain Pendant takes center stage as you ascend the steps to the porch. The Sky Chief has a classic warehouse shade design that is hand spun from commercial grade steel. Finished with three coats of porcelain enamel glass, the high-gloss finish will never fade and is easy to maintain.

This particular fixture has been customized with a 16″ shade in a White finish, a flush mount stem, and a Galvanized wire guard to add a vintage touch that complements the cottage’s architectural detailing. While the downward directed light of this fixture makes it great for the front door, you could add more nostalgic flavor with an Edison Style Light Bulb. These bulbs offer warm light and mirror the style of bulbs used in the early 20th century when this cottage was brand new.

By the side door leading to the dining room, a handsome barn wall sconce lights the way and adds a touch of rustic charm to this corner of the porch. The Bantam Universal Wall Sconce features a stacked neck design on a 10″ shade making it suitable for tight spots like this or in hallways and powder rooms.

American made from commercial grade materials, this wall sconce can be customized with an amazing array of finish colors. With everything from basic Black, White and Galvanized to the more exotic Royal Blue, Blush Pink, and our newest color Charcoal Granite, you can create a light that is perfectly suited to any décor. Add a cast guard and glass for a nautical look or a dusk-to-dawn photocell to automatically turn your light on at dusk and off at dawn.
