No matter how many houses you call home through the years, the first one is pretty special. For Amanda and her husband, Christopher, the move from a New York apartment to a Cape Cod-style modern farmhouse in Dutchess County was exciting as they started incorporating their own style into the space.
“The first remodel consisted of a new master bathroom, refinishing the hardwood floors, and replacing dated mudroom tiles with wood floors,” Amanda says. “We also replaced all of the light fixtures in the house.” Although she didn’t like the existing lights which were wood and iron with candles, Amanda couldn’t put her finger on exactly what she did want.
“It was one of those things where I didn’t know until I saw it,” she explains. “It was probably during a late-night Google session that I found Barn Light Electric and once I saw the lighting options, I knew I’d found what I wanted. The vintage styles were definitely important, especially the porcelain enamel lighting. And being made in America is great.”
As she searched the vast array of barn lights on the site, she fell in love with the idea of adding a warehouse light to her space.
“Everything kind of grew from there,” she says. “We wanted the house to feel warm and inviting with neutral walls and fixtures so we could buy fun furniture.” The couple painted the walls a soothing gray throughout the home and used complementary fixtures throughout the house to make it feel larger.
In Amanda’s home office, a classic warehouse shade in the form of The Original™ Warehouse Flush Mount Pendant provides plenty of lighting with its 12″ shade. This rugged ceiling light sports a Galvanized finish and matching Galvanized wire cage for an industrial look. A matching pendant was also installed in a nearby bedroom.
“These were the first fixtures we bought,” Amanda explains. “These rooms are small so I didn’t think a stem mount was the right move. The Galvanized finish looks nice with the gray walls and white ceiling plus it’s a bit more industrial which I thought was appropriate for the office.”
While the flush mount pendants were perfect in these smaller spaces, a matching Original™ Stem Mount Pendant found a home in the upstairs hallway. This hand-spun ceiling light features the same Galvanized finish and is mounted on a 12″ stem.
The master bedroom, also located upstairs, needed new lighting as well. When they moved from the apartment into the house, Amanda had her heart set on a king-size blue velvet bed and she wanted something equally special to light the space.
“My husband picked the Drake Copper Stem Mount Pendant for our bedroom because he thought the raw copper would match the blue of the bed,” she says. The couple customized this handcrafted copper light with a 14″ shade, Raw Copper finish and 6″ copper stem.
“I was worried it would look like it belonged in a kitchen, but it looks great!” Amanda says. Be sure to check back on Wednesday when we take a tour of the downstairs spaces where the kitchen, mudroom, and powder room undergo makeovers too!
